Andrea Camilleri, Sicilian writer, author of the fictional character Inspector Salvo Montalbano set in the imaginary town of Vigata (Porto Empedocle and the surrounding area). Due to Montalbano popularity, in 2003 the town changed its official denomination to Porto Empedocle Vigata. The name Montalbano is an homage to the Spanish writer Manuel Vázquez Montalbán
